Maritime Education Instructor

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Summer Camp Instructors provide primary supervision and guidance to participants during all Summer Camp Programs. They will work together with NPS and Association staff to implement the summer program curriculum and ensure that all participants have a safe, fun, and educational experience. Instructors must be highly motivated and energetic and will help provide an inclusive, welcoming environment for campers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Become familiar with the curriculum and Park setting

● Assist the Lead Instructor in delivering curriculum

● Support camper check-in and check-out process

● Supervise students and maintain a safe environment at all times

● Assist in developing Extended Care curriculum and work Extended Care when scheduled

● Assist with daily setup and cleanup of camp activities

● Use good judgment and demonstrate professionalism and accountability

CONDITIONAL STATUS:

Our summer camp season is from June 3 – August 9; there is a need for an Assistant Instructor in sessions where the enrollment is over 8 campers. The Assistant Instructor will be notified of employment status on a session-by-session basis. At the date of the job posting, six of the nine sessions are fully enrolled.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Education & Experience Required:

● Upper-level high school or college student or graduate

● Demonstrated leadership experience

● Experience working with children a plus

2) Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

● CPR/First Aid Certification

● Desire and ability to learn educational techniques

● Experience in small rowing and sailing vessels

● Excellent communication skills

● Ability to multi-task, be innovative, and find creative solutions

The employee must have the ability and experience to handle, professionally, possible strenuous conditions aboard the vessel due to foul weather or other unpredictable conditions. This position operates primarily in an outdoor environment. Camp gathers in a historic building, and activities occur on docks and piers, along the beach, and aboard historic vessels. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week

Project Archives Technician

San Francisco Maritime National Park Association (SFMNPA) is seeking a part-time Project Archives Technician to assist in the processing of approximately 125,000 original architectural and engineering drawings in the Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding, San Francisco records, HDC 345, Series 11 (SAFR 17494). The work consists of inventorying and rehousing the collection currently stored in original tubes and documenting current conditions through written reports and digital photography. The position is a project funded position employed by the SFMNPA under a task agreement with the National Park Service. All technical work will be supervised by the Park Senior Archivist. All work will be completed on site at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s Collection and Archives Storage Facility located at Landmark Building E, Fort Mason, San Francisco, California.

The current position is funded for approximately 2 years. The project is planned to continue for up to 4 years depending on funding availability.

The NPS Collections Manager and Senior Archivist will plan, direct, and oversee all work in completion of the project. The Project Archives Technician’s work will be guided by the SFMNPA Project Archives Specialist. NPS will provide direction, workspace, and equipment. SFMNPA project staff will have access to secure museum collection storage, and all preservation and processing work will be done on site.

Ability and willingness to meet the physical requirements of the work, including lift and carry 50 pounds, climb ladders and stack-stairs, manage large or awkwardly shaped material, stand and move around a large worktable for long periods of time, and wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, experience, and education:

  • Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework completed towards a degree in library and information science, archival studies, museum studies, or closely related field. Candidates who are current students will be considered.
  • Previous experience working in an archives or museum environment handling archival or museum material is a plus including internships and volunteer work. Experience with oversized architectural and engineering drawings is an additional plus.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and precise legible handwriting.
  • Intermediate or advanced skill using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data. Experience in data management using MS Access and Excel as well as experience with digital camera photography, image management and editing is a plus.
  • Follow instructions and direction of project leads.
  • Willingness to take direction and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals.
  • Proven ability to solve problems creatively and see projects through the full life cycle.
