Project Description:
USS Pampanito is a WW II submarine museum and memorial. Our goal is to bring maritime history to life, and to make the USS Pampanito as complete and accurate to her 1945 configuration as possible. We educate approximately 4,000 students in day and overnight programs, and approximately 100,000 visitors a year tour the boat.
We have had welding and hand tool infrastructure at the museum since it was opened in 1981. This page was created to document the significant upgrades to these tools starting in 2013. We apologize in advance if we missed the many earlier donors. Note we created a machine shop starting in 2016 and some of the machines and tools in its machine shop notes could easily have been included here (air compressors, presses, hydraulic bender, blast cabinet, ...) The electrical power supply is described in the electrical project notes. All three notes compliment each other.
The welding shop infrastructure is needed to repair, and restore the equipment on, and the historic fabric of the boat so it can be better preserved, researched, and interpreted. Our goal is to have enough machines and tooling that a journeyman welder/fabricator should only have to bring a small hand carried toolbox of their favorites and personal protection equipment when they come to volunteer, and the ships crew can do basic repair.
The notes below document some of the equipment in the shop. It provides a resource for planning projects from home, and information that will be needed for the repair and maintenance of the equipment by the museum crew over time. We also wanted to document, acknowledge, and thank the incredibly generous donors of advice, repair work, parts, tooling, and machines.

Welding platen with accessories.
The welding platen (table top) was recovered from USS Nereus, a WW II submarine repair ship before it was scrapped. The platen has no brand or model markings, and does not have the fit and finish of a Weldsale or Acorn table. It is still incredibly tough. Platen is 48" x 48" with approx. 1.7" dia. holes. Clamp flanges work best around 1.6" diameter. It sits on a shop built stand. The accessories mostly came from Weldsale donations, others were bought or individually donated.

Caldwell Crane donated a K90-1-10/10 portable gantry crane. 10'-5" inside span, 10 foot tall when extended, 1-ton. 650 lbs. This comes apart into pieces that can be moved by hand so it can be moved onto deck, etc. then re-assembled.
The grey welded gantry crane was built by Marvin Wong. This one is welded so can handle greater weight, 97" from deck to bottom of beam. It has an extension and counter weight designed to allow raising a small boat from the bay to the pier.

Personal protective gear includes. Welding hood, fire blankets, gloves, welding goggles, grinding face shield, respirator, jacket, TIG finger, arm pads, hearing protection.
This five gas confined space/combustible gase meter is used to test the air for a dangerous gas environment before welding or confined space entry.

One of the last, and most important upgrades was to add ground fault protected receptacles and clean dry air next to the welding platen and metal work tables. The electrical details are in our electrical notes, the air in our shop notes.. The receptacle on left is 480V 3P 30A, center 120V 1P 20A, right 208V 3P 30A.
We have GFI protected 120V 1P (inside the box) and 480V 3P hidden under the superstructure of the boat at frame 68 for projects outside the hull on the boat. There is also GFI protected 120V 1P and 480V 3P available in the after battery tank for projects inside the hull.
