PRESERVING MORE THAN A SUBMARINE

By Diane Cooper, Curator USS Pampanito
Excerpt from the The Sea Letter, Spring/Summer # 78

Pampanito (SS-383) extends beyond daily maintenance, trips to dry dock, giving tours, and conducting maintenance, trips to dry dock, giving tours, and conducting science schools. A major, and rather hidden, portion of that preservation and interpretation revolves around the men who served as her crew. The USS Pampanito museum collection numbers around 2,500 items and includes three-dimensional artifacts, historic photographs, manuals, books, plans, and documents. Since the submarine first arrived at Pier 45, Pampanito crewmembers and men who served on other World War II submarines that have been lost have donated their personal items to help us tell their stories. Until recently, there has been no place where we could exhibit these items and share those stories.

We hope you enjoy the historic treasures below!
