SEA SHADOW - CANARD MACHINERY

Image Size:

The study of computer controlled ship control with canards foreward and stabilizers aft without conventional rudders was a major goal of the program.

This space contains the machinery that operates the forward control surface, also called a canard. The large, stainless steel shaft goes through the hull to and holds the canard. Hydraulics control the rotation of the shaft. Outboard on the shaft can be seen many wires attached with grey epoxy. Below the epoxy are torque sensors used during the study of the forward control surface design.

The hydraulic power plant fills most of the inside space.

Aft there is the ladder that leads up to the access trunk, and the hydraulically operated door aft to the pump room.
