All the food for the entire crew was prepared here. The officers were served out of the pantry in the wardroom, but it was the same meal.

The bakers worked overnight and bread was stored in the locker on starboard. A special pie locker holds enough pie for the entire crew.

Note the square and rectangular pots, they can hold more than round pots when heated on the rectangular hotplates.

Only on a submarine where there is absolutely no free space would you store the pots over the hotplates and below the ventilation hood. It must have made keeping the pots clean nearly impossible.

The shelves would have held cans of frequently used foodstuffs, spices, etc. The dishes were normally stored in the benches in the crew's mess.
