INSTRUCTIONS

1. This publication is to be used with the Hagelin Cryptographer, CSP 1500.

2. The KEY consists of:

(a) The Lug Positions on the Tooth Bars, changed three times monthly.
(b) The Pin Settings on the Key Wheels, changed daily.
(c) The Internal Indicator Enciphering/Deciphering Table.

3. LUG POSITIONS: (See Table I)

The chart showing the Lug Positions is arranged in a form having the same relative position as the assembly in the device. This assembly is located at the rear of the device and is exposed by unlocking and opening the top of the inner compartment. A tool is provided for rearranging the Lugs, and is clamped into place at the left side of the lid of the device. In rearranging the Lugs, care should be exercised that each Lug is firmly seated into its respective slot, otherwise the machine will not function properly. The numbers in the right hand column of the Lug Position Chart refer to the numbers appearing on the right hand wheel of the assembly, and the numbers appearing at the top of the columns refer to the numbers appearing on the bracket at the rear of the machine. An "X" appearing in a column under a number indicates a Lug is to occupy that position.

4. PIN SETTINGS. (See Table II)

Each letter on the Key Wheels has an associated Pin, which is located directly under the letter, and each Pin must occupy a position either to the right, or to the left, of the Key Wheel. In the chart of Pin Settings, the columns represent the Key Wheels, and each line shows the Pin Settings for a day of the month. A letter appearing on a line indicates the Pin associated with that letter (for the respective Key Wheel designated by the column) is to be to the RIGHT of the Key Wheel; a letter omitted indicates that Pin is to be to the LEFT of the Key Wheel.

5. THE INTERNAL INDICATOR ENCIPHERING/DECIPHERING TABLE.

Every message sent in this system must have the Internal Indicator (The Initial Code Wheel Lineup) enciphered in accordance with the Internal Indicator Enciphering/Deciphering Table. A special system of Indicators is used. Every message will have "XX" appearing as the first two letters of the first group, and "XX" appearing as the last two letters of the second group. (See diagram below) The remaining six letters form the Internal Indicator and are obtained by enciphering the Initial

INSTRUCTIONS

Key Wheel Lineup in accordance with paragraph 7(c). The first two groups are repeated at the end of the message (in the same order). The following example illustrates a complete dispatch and is true in form only. It does not represent an actual encipherment.

System Indicator, Internal Indicator and Text identified in sample message.

6. OPERATION:

(a) To prepare the machine for operation, unlock the cover of the machine, and, using the same key, unlock and raise the lid. Position the lugs in accordance with the Lug Position Chart, and set the Pins in accordance with the Pin Setting Chart. Close the lid and lock it into place.

NOTE: Certain machines have operating handles in the form of a crank, which is locked into place with the handle turned up. The crank is unlocked by pushing the lock to the rear of the device; the handle snaps into place when brought into position.

(b) Press the button located to the right (on the lid) and by means of the Wheel Reset - Knob, reset the Counter to zero. By means of the tape knob, advance the tape sufficiently to provide space for the Indicators and any other data which must be added after the message is enciphered.

NOTE: Through an aperture located immediately to the right and on the shaft of the Letter Dial, a letter of an additional alphabet can be seen. The letter "X" of this alphabet must be set to "X" on the Letter Dial, To effect this setting, turn the Letter Dial until "X" appears in the aperture and lock this letter into place by pressing the button located to the right of the Counter. Pull the Letter Dial to the left, disengaging it from the shaft, and turn it until "X" is opposite the white reference mark, and replace it into position.

SECRET INSTRUCTIONS - (continued) CSP 1502(B)

7. ENCIPHERMENT:

(a) Insure that the counter has been set to zero and that "X" has been set to "X" (paragraph 6(b). Arrange the Lugs and set the Pins in accordance with the Key designated by the Date/Time group to be used with the message. Turn the Encipher/ Decipher control knob located on the left end of the device so that "C" appears upward. By means of the tool in the lid, set the six Key Wheels to a random position.

NOTE: These six Key Wheels must in every case be different for each message enciphered in the Key for that day. They must be set at random and no system followed.

The six letters appearing on the Key Wheels from left to right form the Initial Key Wheel Line-up and are to be enciphered to form the Internal Indicator which will appear as the third to eighth letters inclusive, of the first two and last two groups of the message. Make a. note of this setting for future reference, and for later encipherment as part of the Indicators.

(b) Encipher the text. Turn the Letter Dial to the first letter of the text, and by nouns of the Operating Handle, step the machine. Similarly, proceed with the remainder of the text, using "X" for spaces between the words. The letters will be automatically grouped into five letters. (The "X" will not appear on the decipherment and normal spacing of the words will result). After completing the encipherment, advance the tape until all printing is clear and tear off.

NOTE: The mechanism of the machine automatically locks after each step, and is unlocked by moving the Letter Dial to a new position, thus, if a letter to be enciphered appears after a step, the Letter Dial must be moved and returned to the letter in order to unlock the mechanism.

(c) Add the Indicator groups as follows:

(1) Place "XX" on the tape as the first two letters of the Indicator groups.
(2) Encipher, and add the Initial Key Wheel Line-up as follows: (See Table III)

(A) Divide the six letters into three pairs.

(B) From the Internal Indicator Enciphering/Deciphering Table and using the first pair, locate the line indicated by the first letter, and the column designated by the second letter. The two letters located at the intersection of the line and column is the encipherment of the first pair. Enter these letters us the third and fourth letters of the Indicator groups.

(C) Similarly, encipher the second and third pairs, and enter them as the fifth-sixth and seventh-eighth letters of the Indicator Groups.

-5-

SECRET INSTRUCTIONS - (continued) CSP 1502(B)

(D) Complete the Indicator groups by adding "XX" as the ninth and tenth letters.

8. DECIPHERMENT:

(a) Insure that the counter has been set to zero, and that "X" has been set to "X" (paragraph 6(b). Arrange the Lugs, and set the Pins in accordance with the Key indicated by the Date/ Time group of the message. Turn the encipher/decipher control knob located at the left end of the device so that "D" appears upward. Advance the tape 4 or 5 inches to allow for Indicator groups and identification data to be added later.

(b) Decipher the Internal Indictor to obtain the Initial Key Wheel Line-up: (See Table III)

(1) Divide the Internal Indicator, (the third to eighth letters inclusive) into three pairs.

(2) From the Internal Indicator Enciphering/Deciphering Table and using the first pair, locate the line designated by the first letter, and the column designated by the second letter. The two letters located at the intersection of the line and column is the decipherment of the first pair, and is the first and second letters of the Initial Key Wheel Line-up.

(3) Similarly, decipher the second and third pairs, to obtain the fifth-sixth and seventh-eighth letters of the Initial Key Wheel Line-up.

(c) Set the Key Wheels in accordance with the Initial Key Wheel Line-up just obtained.

(d) Decipher the text. Turn the Letter Dial to the first letter of the cipher text and by means of the Operating Handle, step the machine once. Similarly, decipher the remainder of the text, ignoring the spacing between groups.

(e) On decipherment, the "X" will not be printed, consequently the words will be properly spaced; however, words containing the letters "X" will have a blank space where the letter "X" should appear. These words must be completed by inspection; however, in case of confusion, set the encipher/decipher knob to "C" while deciphering. The "X" will be printed and must be ignored where appearing between words.
