ALMABIG
The Explorers Day Program, the 2007 American Sail Training Association Program of the Year, takes place on the Alma, a historic sailing schooner, and one of the last surviving links to San Francisco’s maritime past. The vessel is Coast Guard licensed and inspected to carry passengers. The Alma is operated by a professional skipper and crew and carries Age of Sail instructors aboard. Using a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach, students in small groups are introduced to and work with the magnetic compass, navigation and charts. They will learn where weather comes from and its effect on the earth, the physics of sails, and what it felt like for the earliest explorers and immigrants to journey to San Francisco by sea. These activities will be interspersed with actually sailing the ship. Students will hoist and trim sails and each student will take a trick at the helm. The curriculum varies depending on grade level. The Explorers program may be combined with an Age of Sail Overnight program aboard the Balclutha.
