CHAPTER V
SHIP-ASSEMBLY CROSS-REFERENCE INDEX
1. This index includes only those ships arranged alphabetically which have mount or turret assemblies not identified by a Mark and Modification. It is a tabulation of all mount or turret assemblies which have been installed, were to be installed, or are to be installed on ships in the U. S. Navy. From this index it is possible to turn to the Assembly Number Index (Chapter 1I) and find the assembly number and the corresponding Marks and Modifications of equipment that apply to a particular ship.
2. In the index the number of turrets or mounts on the ship is given. Each turret or mount on board ship is given a number counting consecutively from forward. The forward turret is always Number One. The first turret abaft Number One is always Number Two, etc.
3. Each caliber of gun has a new series of assembly numbers. Therefore, the caliber of the guns on each ship must be known in order to pick out the proper part of the Assembly N umber Index to refer to. The length in calibers is given as additional information only and is not needed to locate properly the assemblies in the Assembly Number Index.
4. An example of how to use the Cross-Reference Index follows: BB 57 will be used. She has three 16 inch/45 turrets with the assembly numbers 72-74. Turret Number One always has the lowest assembly number, in this case it is 16 inch Turret Assembly No. 72. Turret Number Two is 16 inch Turret Assembly No. 73, etc.
